Health Detective Day

Media Invite

A great shoutout to Parkway East Hospital for organizing such a successful event, truly a 3-Generation Discovery Experience.

The previous visit to Parkway East Hospital was fun when the girls learnt about Orthopaedic (you can read it here), but when I received the invite to a similar place, I was slightly apprehensive how the girls will receive the news. Apparently, both Joey and Jayne were super excited to go back again. And we were able to bring my mothers along for a “Grandparents” experience.

Kids Health Detective Experience
The kids learnt about the different occupations in a hospital – experience jobs like a general practitioner, a dietician and a radiologist.

The girls learnt about how to deter germs & viruses, hygiene and the right way to wash their hands. Jayne volunteered to show the class what she learnt. Ever since the class, every single meal time, the girls will always remind us (parents) to wash our hands too. Even the kids who came to our house were not spared the lessons. =)

Next, they went to the Dietician room and were so excited to see all the different placard food. Kids are so easily contented, haha..

Thanks to all the hospital staff and volunteers who worked hard to keep the kids’ attention for learning.

The final room for the kids was the Radiologist room.

Once again, my dear Jayne took the chance to be a volunteer for the group. I think she feels it was fun to lay down and have some rest.

Grandparents Health Detective Experience
The grandmothers learnt more about healthy eating, muscle strengthening exercises and get a cataract screening by experienced eye specialists.

A thoughtful gesture from the organizers, there was Chinese interpretation for both my mothers.

The second class for the Grandparents were more interesting and new to them – strengthening exercises.

You can see how serious my mother (extreme right photo) was in learning the right way to stretch and do the exercise. She commented later that the exercises were very useful and easy to remember. Looks like I need to buy one of these stretching bands for her, maybe a great Christmas present.

The final part of the exercising class was a free style dance. Just move together with the music. All the grandparents are so cute, dancing and enjoying themselves.

Check out the YouTube link below and see how the grandparents danced.

Last but not least, both grandmothers had a chance to do an eye check. Elderly should have a regular cataract screening, preferably once a year. Thankfully, both of the them are fine, with just the usual de-generating of eye sight and probably a bit of drooping eyelid.

Superchef Family Kitchen Challenge
Grandma, Mother and Child combined to whip up a healthy and delicious meal.

The idea of having this Superchef competition was really to enhance the closeness of the 3-generation ties. The guest chef did a demonstration for the kids and see how attentive they were. I’m not sure were they really genuinely interested in the cooking or just the kids’ eagerness to win a competition. Nonetheless, it was a great chance to be involved in some form of cooking and hopefully inspire them to be more of a help in future.

For the first time, Joey participated in a cooking event with her mother and grandmother. It was such a beautiful moment to behold.
